Where do you go when you look for Ashton Kutcher? Wow there’s a sentence I thought I would never say.. Anyway, to answer my question, I pop open some Netflix and click on the link that says ‘That 70’s Show’ or switch over to my Amazon account and search up Romantic Comedies. However, lately, Ashton has picked up a second job that would become more important to our culture and safety.
In 2008, at the time, married couple: Demi Moore and Ashton, founded a non profit organization to stop human trafficking. Moore was inspired after viewing a documentary on human trafficking and sexual slavery in Cambodia. In 2012 the name of the organization was changed, due to the divorce of Moore and Kutcher. ‘DNA’ became ‘Thor’ as of November 2012 and the two remain to work together as co founders and members of the board. Along with Demi and Ashton, the board of Thorn includes: Ray Chambers, Jim Pitkow, amongst a few others. Moore and Ashton released a statement regarding where, ‘DNA’ to ‘Thorn’, would be headed in the future after their split:
“For the past three years we have focused our work broadly on combating child sex trafficking. It has become crystal clear in our efforts that technology plays an increasingly large role in this crime and in the sexual exploitation of children overall. We believe that the technology-driven aspect of these crimes demands its own attention and investment.”
Thorn is an organization dedicated to fight against human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children. This non profit focuses on creating technology and internet based institutions to filter out and expose any online human trafficking websites and child pornography. The epidemic is an issue worldwide, but who actually knew that it was also happening in the United States. Since changing the name to ‘Thorn’, many more have joined in for the endeavor to rid the internet of predators, such as, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Salesforce Foundation, Twitter and many more.
Thorn has also partnered with other organizations: ‘Polaris Project’ (non profit for human trafficking and sex slavery), ‘Girls Educational and Mentoring Services’ and ‘The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’. Within six month, the organization identified over 2,000 victims of child sex trafficking. In 2017 the technology has currently been able to detect over 6,000 victims and they don’t plan to stop anytime soon.
Ashton has currently quit his job as an actor, not sure if permanently or temporarily, to dedicate his full time to this organization. The fact that a Hollywood star has committed to such a horrible epidemic, to make a change in the world and lives of children, says so much about his character. If you weren’t a fan of his before, try and not be a fan now.
