TRUMP'S DIVISIVE COMMENTS SHAKE UP THE SPORTS WORLD
POSTED SEPT. 24TH, 2017 | BY MICHAELA P. SHELTON
Approximately two days ago YOUR president (I don’t claim him as my president) made the following statement at a rally in Huntsville, Alabama: "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He's fired. He's fired!" The crowd cheered as Donald Trump disrespected National Football League quarterback, Colin Kaepernick and the NFL as a whole.
If you are out the loop on what happened with Colin Kaepernick and the NFL last year, let me give you some background. During the 2016 season, Kaepernick received backlash for protesting by not standing while the United States National Anthem was being played before games. This protest was motivated by what he views as this country’s oppression of people of color. His actions inspired many other athletes and sports leagues to protest the anthem in a variety of ways. After this controversial behavior, Kaepernick decided to opt out of his contract with the 49ers to become a free agent. So far no team has offered him a contract for the 2017 NFL season.
Now here we are at the beginning of football season and Trump just had to stir the pot with his unnecessary comments and tweets. Players, coaches, the league, TV analysts and more feel some type of way about the orange man’s divisive comments. Today many people were anxious to see what forms of backlash would ensue on this football Sunday.
But before I discuss the effects of number 45th’s harsh words at the rally, let me rewind to what happened yesterday morning, because he was just showing his ass ALL weekend.
Everyone knows that NBA Finals champions always get invited to the White House. That means that this year, the Golden State Warriors were invited to the White House. On the team’s media day, Stephen Curry said that while the team will collectively make the decision regarding the White House visit, he personally does not want to go and will vote “No.”
Of course Steph Curry voicing his personal opinion (which he is entitled to) wasn’t okay... Trump had to clap back, because he’s so available to tweet regardless of us being on the verge of war and all the natural disasters occurring. He’s always available for a clap back like it’s in his job description SMH.
This is what Trump tweeted yesterday morning:
First of all, this is the most pathetic thing I have EVER seen. How are you going to uninvite someone and call someone out who didn’t want to go to your beloved White House in the first place? That’s like firing someone after they quit, the logic just isn’t there. But of course Trump couldn’t let the Warriors vote and make the decision he had to have the last word.
BUT NO TRUMP! YOU DON’T HAVE THE LAST WORD! Cleveland Cavalier forward Lebron James took to Twitter to respond shortly after the tweet was posted.
Of course many other celebrities and people in general started tweeting and commenting too, but the fact that Lebron James who’s not even on the Warriors came out the cuts and came for Trump shows that this man is out of his mind and is clearly digging himself a deeper hole. First you comment against the NFL and literally the NEXT DAY you disrespect one of the most prominent current figures in the NBA? This man is reckless and I’m just waiting for the day he is impeached. It hasn’t even been a year and Trump has done so much damage. Not to mention the many people he’s fired and the many who have quit their positions. Has he ever stopped to think it’s not you, it’s me?
Today, teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Tenessee Titans and the Seattle Seahawks stayed in the locker room during the National Anthem. Other NFL players across the league knelt, locked arms, and raised their fists besides coaches and even owners. I like that everyone is taking action and standing up against number 45. It needs to be made plain that this man can not continue this erratic, belligerent and disrespectful behavior.
Shout out to Colin Kaepernick the man behind all of this. He basically sacrificed his career to stand up for something he strongly believes in and it is turning into a movement. I want the protests to go further than this, because at the end of the day kneeling and staying in the locker room is nice and dandy, but that is not stopping the oppression of people of color in this country. More needs to be done, but this is definitely a step. I just hope that this isn't propaganda and the NFL isn't hopping on board with Kaepernick's movement to manipulate Americans who have boycotted the NFL and make them support the NFL again. This could be all about money, because if Americans stop boycotting the NFL that means their money will start flowing back in because Americans are back going to games and re-purchasing sports packages on television. But only time will tell how genuinely dedicated the NFL is to standing up against Trump and what's right.
In conclusion, everyone make sure to always stand up for what you believe in. And in the words of YG, “F*** Donald Trump!!!”
PS. Please enjoy these pics of Steph Curry and The Golden State Warriors at the White House 😉
