ALBUM REVIEW: SHOULD WE REALLY BE GRATEFUL FOR KHALID'S NEW ALBUM?
POSTED JULY 4TH, 2017 | BY MICHAELA P. SHELTON
Earlier this summer DJ Khaled released his tenth studio album, “Grateful”. The album recently made it to #1 on the Billboard 200 and has two singles that are constantly played on the airwaves. I like the album, but to be honest I am more a fan of “Major Key”, which DJ Khaled released a year ago.
The album has 23 tracks and is an hour and 30 minutes long. First of all, that is too long to me. I like healthy albums filled with tracks, but 23 is just way too many. I feel like DJ Khaled should of cut some of the tracks from Grateful, but it is what it is. I must say that he did do a good job at recruiting relevant artists.
The first single, Shining featuring Beyoncé and Jay- Z is just super whack to me. I don’t like the beat or the lyrics, so I always skip through this track because It is super repetitive and annoying. I am shocked that the power couple didn’t come through. Jay Z’s verse was pretty good, but it couldn’t save the track. The next single, To the Max featuring Drake isn’t that great either. The lyrics just don’t correlate to the beat and I don’t like it or think it should have been a single.
Now let’s talk about Wild Thoughts featuring Bryson Tiller and Rihanna. This is the best song on the album in my opinion. The sample of “Maria, Maria” by Santana was interpolated perfectly with the smooth vocals. I like the song and I feel like the concept is very creative. I never knew that Bryson Tiller and Rihanna would create such magic together, but DJ Khaled showcased their true talents with this track.
I guess I have to mention I’m the One featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil’ Wayne. I personally can not stand this song, because I think it is so corny and juvenile. I like every single artist on the track, don’t get me wrong, but there is too much auto tune. Also, I feel like someone else should of sang the hook. Justin Bieber is talented but I would have preferred Jeremih or even Chris Brown to make the song more grown and sexy. I just don’t think Bieber was good for this specific song, but shout out to DJ Khaled for creating a track that everyone likes… except me LOL. He definitely knows how to appeal to listeners.
Songs on the album I do like include Nobody featuring Alicia Keys and Nicki Minaj, I Can’t Even Lie featuring Future and Nicki Minaj and Iced Out My Arms featuring Future, 21 Savage, Migos and T.I. Honestly, the other tracks are whatever to me. I’m not saying this album isn’t good it just can’t compare to “Major Key”. “Major Key” had tracks like For Free featuring Drake, I Got the Keys featuring Jay-Z and Future and Do You Mind which featured Nicki Minaj, August Alsina, Chris Brown and Jeremih. Regardless of what I think, DJ Khaled is doing his thing. Check out the #1 album on the Billboard 200, Grateful.
