STUDIO TALK WITH LEGENDS LIVE FOREVER’S TROYLLF
POSTED AUGUST 1ST, 2017 | BY MICHAELA GREEN
I had the opportunity to shoot the shit with Legends Live Forever’s Troy Mathews. LLF has recorded in the same San Francisco studio for the last five or six years. I was happy to head over to the studio so I could get down to the nitty gritty with Troy.
LEGENDS LIVE FOREVER
I first heard about Legends Live Forever when they performed for the Mix of Pearls Fashion Show in Hayward, CA about 5 years ago, and they are still on the scene, now that’s something to take serious. They were a bunch of down to earth chill guys who loved music and loved to perform. LLF is out of the Fillmore District of San Francisco, California and I had the pleasure of stopping by the LLF studio to speak with Troy, an artist from the group.
Troy defines Legends Live Forever as “A statement – a lifestyle more than calling yourself legendary, but once you’ve reached a certain greatness you become a legend like 2 Pac, Biggie, or even Denzel who are people that worked hard and built their foundation – Dudes from the hood who want to be able to tell our story and leave our mark.”
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
Bianca, a singer in LLF Co-founded The City Eats. The City Eats has allowed LLF to give back to the community for the last three years by doing monthly feeds for the homeless in the San Francisco and Oakland areas.
LLF not only gives back to the community but the group also gives back to the music community, though the Spread The Wealth Tour. The tour is for up and coming artist in the greater Bay Area. The tour allows for all artist in the community to get a chance to perform. According to Troy, “artist in the east bay are like neighbors – Oakland, Berkeley, Fairfield, Vallejo, and then The City is just kind of off to itself and left out, but it’s important to make those connections”, hints “spread the wealth”.
BEING TAKEN SERIOUS AS AN ARTIST
In order to make connections, it is key to be taken serious as an artist. Troy says he does this by NOT joking about his music. “I carry myself as an artist, I make sure I know what I’m talking about. When I give a CD, I make sure my presentation is on point and my music is quality.” According to Troy Image and the quality of your music are to key things when wanting to be taken serious in the industry.
BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCE
For Troy, 2 Pac is the greatest of all time. “He embodied everything as an artist and he was a person I could relate to. 2 Pac’s poetry to his music, he paints pictures of the streets and the struggle. Goes back to a person being a legend, I want to go down like that. People remembering my presence and how I made them feel, from being an influence to kids to being a humanitarian in the community”, says Troy.
Like many of us, 2 Pac’s Keep Ya Head Up was an influential record. “I was really young, about five or six, but I understood the message in that song. I was living with my mom and I was around women all the time.” For Troy Keep Ya Head Up was uplifting to women and it was similar to what Troy’s father used to tell him, “have your moms back”.
MUSIC & DATING: HOW TO FIND BALANCE
Troy says “Dating is like summer league. You’re playing in the summer league and you are playing random games and you play all these different teams. You never know exactly what you are going to get because you haven’t seen all the teams repeatedly, so you are trying to make a team. You kinda gotta date until you get it right”. So basically, it doesn’t matter how great of a music artist you are, they still struggle like the rest of us. Ladies, Troy is single so you might want to stay tuned.
FREE PLAY 3
Troy recently released Free Play 3, which you can find on ITunes music. Troy gives a Bay Area street vibe through his Free Play 3 album. When I say, “street vibe”, I don’t mean your drug and gun slinging d-boy from the hood. Free Play 3 gives a street feel that we can all relate to on an everyday realistic level. Troy tells his real-life story through his music by painting a clear picture his listeners can relate to.
