Boss Babe Roni Davis is breaking barriers and taking names with her Emmy-nominated digital web series Tough Love. Tough Love is a digital series about progressive Black Millennials in New York City working to overcome obstacles along their career paths, while trying to get a grasp on their tumultuous love lives.

Issues that affect millennials and people of color, such as gentrification, “situationships”, career success, #BlackLivesMatter, vulnerability, and much more are discussed throughout each episode. “It started as an Instagram account, @BlackLoveExists, because I missed old black love movies like ‘Love Jones’ and ‘Love and Basketball’,” says Roni. Until one day, her filmmaker husband Caleb Davis and her decided to put their passions and professional strengths together to create Tough Love.
The two met in college and went through some tough love – first there’s the “talking” stage, but not 100% together, then seeing other people, etc. But these two found the light at the end of the tunnel and jumped the broom on June 16, 2017.
When asked how she balances love, life, and working on Tough Love with her husband, she says, “It’s all intertwined. It doesn’t ever feel like work.” Her love advice to those in a relationship is to, “do a passion project together. You learn and grow with each other, and you experience the highs and the lows together.”
Season 3 just began and Roni has some big plans for 2018. Roni’s top five actors or influencers she’d love to have on the show are, “Beyoncé – of course, Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Kofi Siriboe, and Lena Waithe”. As a fellow woman of color and digital web series creator, Issa Rae was and is a big inspiration to Roni. “I remember watching ‘The Misadventures of AWKWARD Black Girl’ and her growth in her craft.” Similar to Issa, Roni knows the power of networking across and involves her friends to help with the creation of the show. “If you spend all your time networking up, you’ll never have time to create what you want and how you want.”
Earlier in the year, the web series was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for the very first time. Although they didn’t go home with the gold, Roni says, “we’re coming for the gold next time.”
Outside of Tough Love, she continues to break barriers by teaching 3rd graders at a local Bronx charter school and working with youth who come from impoverished or low income areas who are not afforded the same education as their wealthier counterparts.
Roni is the definition of #BlackGirlMagic, being one of few women of color in the creative/media space, she is creating room for people of color to create and nurture their talents and dreams. She is putting positive images and real life narratives of millennials of color on blast for everyone to notice.
