It’s 2018 and women are making huge dents in the music industry. I remember a time when Lil Kim was one of the few MC’s doing it and even then, her journey to be taken seriously was beyond anything we could imagine. Now as we always give thanks to the women who paved the way for females to rap, this new generation is here to play.
Has anyone ever heard of Diamonte Harper? Oh wait I’m sorry, let me start over: Hayward, California native ‘Saweetie’ is making her way into the music industry and she is some talent. The Bay Area native comes from African American, Filipino and Chinese heritage and has spent a lot of her life all over the Bay Area, including, San Francisco and Sacramento. Saweetie is a well rounded and educated woman, as she graduated from USC with a 3.6 GPA and later she went on to pursue a rap career.
Saweetie started out posting short raps on Instagram and later went on to record ‘Icy Girl’ over Khia’s beat from ‘My Neck, My Back’ in 2016 and has ten million views on YouTube as of 2018.
She has other hits, such as High Maintenance, and Focus. She released an EP that was also called ‘High Maintenance’ on March 16, 2018 and is made of nine tracks.
Saweetie claims that she is high maintenance in all aspects of her life, including relationships, which is why she chose to brand herself that way.
She was rumored to have made songs referencing her relationships with Keith Powers and Diddy’s son Justin Combs in her EP: ‘B.A.N’ and ‘23’.
The young rapper also has a clothing line called ‘MMM’ and has her own Saweetie Shark Backpacks that are sold at Footaction. Saweetie was very influenced by East and West Coast rap including, Foxy Brown, Lil Kim, B.I.G and Tupac.
She was also inspired by hearing Nicki Minaj rap and claims she had never heard a woman be able to rap that well since Kim and Foxy, which inspired her to start writing and rapping.
The young MC obviously has no limits to where she can go with her career and she has just the type of style and sound that keeps us on our toes for new projects, do not sleep on Saweetie!
