JAZMINE SULLIVAN, RAPHAEL SADDIQ & MAXWELL BRING SOUL BACK TO HOLLYWOOD
POSTED OCTOBER 8TH, 2017 | BY TIFFANY GARCIA
Jazmine Sullivan, Raphael Saddiq and Maxwell hit the stage at the Hollywood Bowl under a full harvest moon on Friday (October 6). The trio brought all the smooth soulful tunes and the entire audience felt the magic. And the women-dominated crowd was not mad at it.
Jazmine Sullivan was the perfect beginning performance for a night to remember. Beginning the set with her R&B hits “Lions, Tigers and Bears” and “Bust Your Windows,” Jazmine pleased her fans and getting us ready for a night of 80s and 90s feel good music, and ended the performance with her new song on Issa Rae’s Insecure soundtrack “Insecure” featuring Bryson Tiller.
Up next, Raphael Saddiq took us back with songs like “Still Ray” and “Good Man”, and throwback jams from Tony! Toni! Toné! days. Everyone was on their feet with hits “Anniversary” and “(Lay Your Head On My) Pillow”. If you were outside the bowl, you could more than likely hear the audience singing along. He closed out his set with a bass jam session playing Solange “Cranes in the Skye” and D’Angelo “How Does It Feel”. But before he left the stage, he made sure to shout out his hometown Oakland, CA and the Bay Area.
Now, let me set the stage for Maxwell’s intro. Blue smoke moves across the stage, the band starts to play “Pretty Wings” and the ladies go crazy as he hits his falsetto like it never left. All night long, the crowd sang to every word of “This Woman’s Work”, “Sumthin, Sumthin” and “Fortunate”.
Celebrities were sprinkled in the crowd like Chaka Khan, Wilder Valderama, Halle Berry and Anthony Anderson.
As a 90’s-music fanatic and enthusiast, this was by far, THE BEST concert I’ve been to.
