CHICAGO BRED TATIANA HAZEL IS AN ARTIST WELL AHEAD OF HER TIME

Chicana artist and Chicago local, Tatiana Hazel, has gained an immense following on Youtube. With over five thousand subscribers, and a few singles, Tatiana has a unique shakiness to her voice that makes her stand out and to definitely have a very wise outlook on life and her music for someone of 21 years of life experience. I sat down with her at ‘WormHole’ coffee shop in Wicker Park to catch up with the young artist to she what she’s about.
SO TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF:
“Im originally from Chicago, Logan Square area. I’ve been making music pretty much my whole life. It’s super hard to talk about myself without incorporating my music, because it’s something that has been a part of me all my life. But I started writing music pretty much since I can remember and started writing with my guitar since I taught myself how to play.”
Tatiana started posting her songs on Youtube when she was 13. She would write and compose her own songs and within doing that for years she taught herself how to play flawless guitar.
“And honestly after I started doing that I was like ‘cool this is what i want to do with my life.’”
I was so intrigued with the fact that the singer/song writer taught herself to play, since i'm also new to guitar and learning to play and that instrument is anything but easy.
SO YOU TAUGHT YOURSELF HOW TO PLAY? HOW WAS THAT? I CAN’T IMAGINE AT 13 HAVING THE PATIENCE TO LEARN TO PLAY LIKE YOU:
“Yeah I mean it does take a lot of time and I guess since I started young it’s cool because now I’m so busy I can’t imagine learning something from scratch. But Youtube tutorials really helped and just practicing everyday and it was fun for me that at that age I could dedicate a lot of time to learning to play.”
Since Tatiana is self taught, I asked her if she could read music, and it’s no surprise that the talented song writer can. “I can read music if I have to but I’m not going to lie I can only read it like really slow” and then her and I just casually start laughing like two little twelve year olds at a coffee shop.
WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO GET INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
“It was pretty natural. At first it was just for fun I would just love to sing and stuff like that and I loved listening to music. Both my sisters had a huge impact on me because they both listened to a lot of music on different spectrums and growing up I listened to a lot of spanish music.”
As an artist Tatiana has made it very clear that she is ‘a little bit of everything’. With her sisters listening to both hip hop and heavy metal music. It is so important for her that her type of music not be limited to one genre. “I’ve just always been surrounded by different things, different genres and different sounds, and that’s why I can’t settle for one thing.” I also asked Tatiana if she had to choose a favorite genre and to describe her music and it was nearly impossible to pick one. “I guess if i had to pick, it would be contemporary and hip hop.”
WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES IN THE INDUSTRY?
“Honestly it’s so hard to say because there are like so many, but in general with my writing style and the way i structure my music, it would have to be Amy Winehouse.
I really loved how open and honest she was.”
Both Tatiana and I agreed how incredible and how much of an influence Amy Winehouse is not only for us, but so many artists that use their music as an outlet and as a way to express themselves in regards to any struggles. “I love how she talks a lot about her personal life and what she goes through in her music.”
Tatiana also admires the late Kurt Cobain, “His voice is so different and non traditional and i loved that about him.” The singer also loves hip hop, she mentioned she loves Kendrick, in regards to contemporary rap and also ‘Graduation’ by Kanye.
HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR MEXICAN BACKGROUND IN REGARDS TO YOUR IDENTITY?
“I am very connected to my culture because every summer I would go and live in Mexico for a month with my family, we have a house there. So being in Mexico and seeing the way my cousins lived and musically they don’t have a lot of options or places to turn to to pursue any of that. And when you choose to be an artist there, they feel it’s not as realistic of a dream as it is here.”
The singer and songwriter and I totally bonded with our mexican heritage. Both of us always visiting Mexico at least every year. Tatiana mentioned that the genres in Durango, where her and her family are from, are very limited, “it’s either house music or very dated Mexican music.”
We also agreed that Mexican representation in reference to the music industry is lacking as well and she would love to be a part of making strides in our society. Tatiana also mentioned to me her song she wrote in spanish called ‘Dimelo’.
TATIANA I DID WANT TO ASK, YOUR SONG ‘LOSING MY MIND’, I KNOW IT’S A LOVE SONG, BUT DOES IT TOUCH ON MENTAL HEALTH AT ALL?
“Yeah I’ve actually talked about that before. I had a music video in regards to the song. My hair was dyed two different colors in the video because I wanted to play on like split personality type of vibes. I was trying to say that I was losing myself in this relationship that I was in. So it was like me being one person with trying to make them happy, but then me consciously being like ‘yikes maybe i shouldn't do that’ and that’s why i wrote ‘Losing my Mind’”.
Talking with Tatiana, she is such a great young spirit who is so wise and ahead of her time in regards to how she carries herself and her priorities. Her and I talked a lot after the interview and we came up with her genre: ‘Contemporary Pop’, so to hear more from Tatiana follow her Youtube channel and don’t sleep on this young artist.
