On July 6th, Boots Riley, mostly known as the lead vocalist for The Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club, made his feature film directorial debut with this summer’s hit, Sorry to Bother You (Annapurna Pictures). In an alternate reality of present-day Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green, finds himself in a dark alternate universe after he discovers a magical talent that leads to material glory, all the while dealing with external obstacles along the way. Three reasons we all need to watch it now:
1. ) Amazing cast and crew
Director Boots Riley and the Cast of 'Sorry to Bother You' (Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Terry Crews, Steven Yeun, and Armie Hammer) @ Sundance 2018-All our faves in one film? Yes, please!
2. ) Points for originality
Cassius comes to realize his ability to “code switch”, successfully to say the least, in his work place, and takes it to a whole new level.
3. ) It Demonstrates the New Wave of Black Indie Film
Riley brings a new point of view for Black indie films, with this film’s originality in narrative and cinematography. Black and Brown representation in mainstream Hollywood is of course crucial, but Sorry to Bother You reminds us that the indie genre does not exclude Black stories.
