President Trump could be getting interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller about his ties to the Russian hackings during the 2016 presidential election. The President’s lawyers are gearing up for a possible interview, and are already strategizing over potential questions that Trump may be asked.
It is unclear exactly when the interview may take place, but sources close to the investigation believe that it will be sooner rather than later. But what is clear, and has been for awhile, is that Mueller’s investigations will eventually lead to a one-on-one interview with Donald Trump, although the terms of that interview has not yet been reached between the two parties.
Members of Trump’s presidential election campaign and the Trump Organization have been the target of Mueller’s investigation looking into possible ties between Trump and Russian hackers who manipulated the 2016 campaign. Already, Trump allies have begun going down due to their connections.
Trump’s former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn recently pleaded guilty to one count of lying to the FBI (a felony) about contacts he had with the Russian government during Trump's presidential transition. Rick Gates, who is a former top official in Trump’s campaign for the presidency, pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and lying to the FBI during their investigation.
Paul Manafort, who served as Trump’s 2016 campaign manager, was charged with conspiracy against the United States after failing to report to the Justice Department that he was a foreign agent lobbying for the Russian government while working to elect Trump.
Despite these indictments hitting very close to the Trump world, the President continues to claim he had no knowledge of his team’s dealings with Russia, and claims he has no problem sitting down with Mueller. “I’m looking forward to it, actually,” he recently told reporters. He added that he was told the interview would happen in just a matter of a few weeks.
His lawyers would later backtrack the President’s statement, saying that he was speaking off the cuff and that no timeline was set in stone.
This is one of the reasons why Mr. Trump’s lawyers are worried: he is notorious for not preparing for meetings or interviews, even those of legal nature and major consequence, and relies instead on his improvisational skills to answer questions.
