TWENTY-NINE YEAR OLD JAMES SHAW JR. STOPS WAFFLE HOUSE RAMPAGE

April 26th, 2018 | by Aamina Guidry

On the morning of Sunday, April 22, 2018, a waffle house in Nashville, Tennessee was struck with a violent shooter who sat outside in his truck before rushing through the popular restaurant and killing four people. The shooter, who has now been captured is identified as Travis Reinking, approached the restaurant wearing only a green jacket and nothing underneath. He shot and killed two people who were waiting outside the restaurant before going in and killing two more people and injuring others.

James Shaw Jr. was able to rush the gunman and ultimately disarm him. Shaw stated he was eating with a friend when Reinking opened fire inside the restaurant. Shaw then jumped from his seat and slid on the ground to the restroom. When the shooter paused, Shaw took the opportunity to ambush him and disarm his gun by throwing it over the bar.

“I figured if I was going to die, he was going to have to work for it," Shaw told reporters Sunday.” Shaw stated to reporters after the incident.

During the ordeal, the barrel of the gun was still hot burning Shaw’s hand, and his elbow was also grazed by a bullet. Shaw felt as though his actions were a “selfish” act, merely trying to save his own life. "I don't want people to think that I was the Terminator or Superman or anybody like that." Shaw stated.

Shaw decided to attend church that same morning, merely a few hours after confronting the gunman, stating it helped him process the traumatizing event. "There's four families that are grieving right now. So much life was lost for no reason. I feel like it could be very selfish of me if I didn't point it out. And I apologize," Shaw said.

Shaw also stated he plans to stay in touch with families who lost their loved ones and has created a GoFundMe page to help with the victims of the shooting. The page has already raised almost $15,000 after only four hours.

Shaw is a father of a four year old girl, and is grateful he is able to see her again. He hopes to raise her in a world of less tragedy and violence.
